15 Low-Stress Jobs for People With Anxiety
If you suffer from any kind of anxiety, it may be hard to believe that there are jobs out there that won’t exacerbate your symptoms. While no job is stress-free, there are certain career paths that are less likely to make you feel anxious or jobs that may even help to relieve some anxiety symptoms.
Whether you have social anxiety or a generalized anxiety disorder, there are plenty of calming and flexible career options that can be full-time, part-time, done from home, in-person or with or without a college degree.
We’ve compiled a list of 15 entry-level jobs that may work well with your anxiety, or inspire you to look into a career path that you haven’t thought of before:
- Blogger: Let’s start with what I’m doing right now! As a blogger, especially if you take on freelancing, you can generally choose your hours as well as how much work you take on. This freedom allows you to avoid common anxiety triggers and have limited interactions with other people. Writing can also be a cathartic, satisfying activity.
- Proofreader: Similar to blogging, proofreading is something you can make a viable freelance career out of. With the freedom to choose who you work with, what you work on, and when you work, proofreading allows you to be in control of your own career. As a proofreader, you bring order to things and provide clarity, which can also be a satisfying and calming task.
- Social Media Manager: While it is another work from home job, a career in the world of social media does commonly involve interaction with other people. It does however allow you to practice these skills in a limited capacity all while utilizing your creativity from a space that you feel comfortable in.
- Graphic Designer: Graphic design also allows for a lot of solo-time that can be accomplished wherever you choose, creating a positive work-life balance. Maybe writing isn’t your thing, but art is another common stress-reliever that many people with anxiety find helpful.
- Computer Programmer/Software Developer: These positions generally provide flexibility as you’re able to do them from home and set your own schedule. Sometimes you don’t need a college degree to land a job in tech, either. Competency plays a large role in the job application process, and many people are able to seek out ways to learn how to strengthen their skills on their own.
- Librarian: What’s more calming than spending most of your time among stacks of books? Being a librarian allows you to work in a quiet, generally low-key environment that isn’t overstimulating. Helping to improve the literacy of others as well as life-long learning is the type of work that can bring both great joy and personal fulfillment to people in this profession.
- Book Store Clerk: If you want to work with books but you don’t have a college degree, working in a book store may be right for you. Book stores tend to be on the calmer side of retail, and if you feel passionate about literature, there’s nothing greater than being surrounded by what you love and sharing that passion with others, too.
- Bookkeeping/Accounting: Most accountants work on their own in quiet, calm offices. However, it is important to note that some accounting and bookkeeping jobs can be high-stress. If spending all day with numbers sounds good to you, apply to jobs at smaller offices or firms where the pressure tends to be lower.
- Transcriptionist: Transcribing audio into written text may feel monotonous to some, but to others, it can be a very meditative task. Transcriptionists usually work on their own in quiet, calm and controlled environments.
- Fitness Trainer: If you like to be active, why not make a career out of it? Working out is a major way people with anxiety control their symptoms and release endorphins. Plus, you’ll be in a position to help a lot of other people with their self-confidence and overall well-being.
- Massage Therapist: While massage therapists are usually facilitating the relaxation of their clients, making others feel at peace can bring a great sense of calm to the therapist themselves. Massages generally take place in a dark room while quiet, calming music plays and pleasing smells fill the air. This environment can reduce stress in clients and therapists alike, and make for a very peaceful workday.
- Pharmacy Technician: While being a pharmacy technician does require a fair amount of interacting with other people, a good portion of the job involves quietly counting pills, measuring medication and labeling bottles behind the counter. - Florist: While you may not be totally outdoors as a florist, you are spending a lot of time working with nature in a setting and with a product that many people find comforting. Although being a florist is customer-facing, you will spend a lot of time being creative alone. And when you do have to interact with people, you’re in the business of making them happy which can lead to a low-stress and fulfilling career.
- Pet-Related: Spending time with animals is a proven way to release endorphins and lower stress. If you’re a pet-lover, looking into an animal-related job could be for you. While careers such as veterinarian come with a lot of pressure, there are plenty of jobs like dog walkers, dog trainers, or pet store workers that allow you to interact with animals and clients in a less stressful way.
